Storytellers

What a joy a good book is!  Over the holidays I got to catch up on some reading, and I was impressed by the way my favourite authors can turn a phrase, tell a narrative, and hook their readers with engaging plot lines.  Where does that talent come from?  Is it mostly innate?  Can it be taught?  Could we all be storytellers?

Clearly I wasn't the only one caught up by a good story... Star Wars was all the rage this week and many students tried their hands at making illustrations using the app Drawing Pad, then putting their pictures into Puppet Edu and recording their ideas.  Some students described their favourite characters, others practised retelling the story, while others chose to make up their own endings, putting a twist on a familiar story.  It is very pleasing to see students choosing to work on multi-step tasks, sustaining their interest and building their skills in a range of ways.  The collaboration and discussions happening show how sociable iPad use can actually be.

Stories can be told through books, through movies and, of course, through drama.  This week we really enjoyed retelling "Mrs. Wishy Washy's Farm".  We retold it using toy props:

We retold it by acting it out:

I'm really looking forward to our upcoming theatre trip; The Gruffalo is one of my favourite books.  I hope it will inspire more storytelling next week!
